Why is the Blazon House from Chiojdu, Buzău famous?
On the hill that dominates the entire area, in the center of the village of Chiojdu, in Buzau, Romania, is a manor house built in a traditional style. Blazon House is a historical monument of national importance (BZ-II-m-A-02383).
What is the history and origin of the Blazon House in Chiojdu?
The house was built in the 17th century by free peasants called Mosneni, who owned large plots of land. They used a special material and technique for decorations and traditionally made wooden elements. The Mosneni were free peasants who were allowed to own land.
What do the blazons on the facade of the building represent?
The name of the building is given by the 8 coats of arms above the main entrance, the middle one representing the double-headed eagle, a symbol of the Byzantine emperors, which belonged to the Cantacuzini family, established in the Romanian lands after the fall of Byzantium in 1453.
Who took care of the architecture of this building?
On April 27, 2012, the Union of Romanian Architects (UAR), as a beneficiary, signed with the Management Authority – the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism – the financing contract for the implementation of the project Consolidation, restoration, and functional remodeling of the Blazon House, Chiojdu commune, Buzau county.
In 2014, the restoration of the building was completed, and the furniture was placed in the house.
The house looks like a mansion in Oltenia but has a unique architecture. It is a massive house, probably designed as a defense, which is why it is supposed to have housed a garrison for a period of time, says the former owner (agerpres.ro).
The Cultural Center was inaugurated in June 2016. Once the restoration process was completed, the house was opened to visitors.
Is it possible to visit the interior of the house?
Yes. The interior of the Blazon House can be visited.
The cellar is built of solid stone, the ground floor is built of a load-bearing wall system, and all the resistance frames are made of solid oak wood, combined with stone and brick. It is such a powerful system that for several decades it rained, the roof fell, but the walls remained, said Florin Dragulin, the former owner.
