What is Nordlingen famous for?

Nordlingen is a picturesque town located in Bavaria, Germany. What makes it really special is the fact that it is built inside an approximately 15 million-year-old meteorite crater, known as the “Ries Crater”. Over time, people built and developed the city inside this unique geological structure.

Diamonds

The stone buildings in the city contain millions of tiny diamonds, all smaller than 0.2 millimeters. The meteorite impact that caused the Nordlinger Ries crater created approximately 72,000 tons when it hit a graphite deposit. The stone from this area was then used to build the stone buildings.

Medieval Architecture

The town retains an authentic medieval appearance, with houses with shingle-style roofs, narrow streets, defense towers, and fortifications. This authentic medieval atmosphere makes Nördlingen an attractive place for tourists and history buffs. It is one of only three cities in Germany to keep its surrounding wall intact, the other two being Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbuhl. The area that includes today’s Nordlingen is part of the Romanian province of Raetia. A Roman villa has been excavated in the Holheim district and can be visited today.
