Atlanteans’ Gate

The 2nd Gate of the Alba Carolina Fortress was demolished when the “Horia, Closca and Crisan Obelisk” was built. Statues of the two Atlanteans and the two lions have been kept at the Unirii Museum. In 2009 the gate was rebuilt based on photographs. The original statues, kept in the museum, have been relocated to the new pillars.

On the top of the statues of the two Atlanteans (a young one and an older one), there are two statues of rampant lions.

The 2nd Gate is located on the road that leads from the first gate to the third gate, at the top of a sloping street that was meant to make it difficult for potential invaders to enter the fortress.

The 2nd Gate has no arches connecting the pillars.

The Mihai Vodă Monastery in Bucharest was constructed in 1591 by Voivode Mihai Viteazul. During Ceaușescu’s era, the monastery was spared from demolition and relocated entirely, through a complex engineering process, to another location.
