The closest airport to Lefkada is the small airport of Aktion/Preveza, about 30 min drive away. This airport works only in summer and does not receive flights from Athens. It receives only charters and low-cost flights from European airports.
By Bus
If you don’t have a car you can go from Athens to Lefkada by Ktel bus. The distance between Athens and Lefkada is 378 km and it will take you around 5 hours to get there.

Some interesting and lesser-known things about Lefkada

  • Legend of Sappho: Lefkada is associated with an interesting legend about the ancient poetess Sappho. Sappho is said to have thrown herself into the sea out of desperation for her unrequited love for a handsome young man named Phaon. The place where he is supposed to have thrown himself into the sea is today called “Leucate” and is located in Lefkada.
  • Mysterious surroundings of the island: Lefkada also has some unusual landscapes, such as Lake Melissani, an underground lake located near the town of Lefkada. There are also the “Syvota Pools”, a series of small bays with turquoise waters and spectacular cliffs.

  • It belongs to the Eptanese group of islands along with Corfu, Zante, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Paxos, and Kithyra
  • Visit this island if you are passionate about mythology, sunbathing, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, boat trips
  • This island is quite wild.  Some of the beaches don’t have a bar or a restaurant where you can buy water or food.
  • The best way to go there is by car and to get with you a few important things in order to have a great stay in Lefkada:
    • Water shoes (will protect your feet on the beaches from pebbles and also protect you in the water)
    • Sun umbrella
    • Cooler bag or electric cooler bag for the car – this will help you to have cool drinks all day long when you travel around the island and on the beaches
    • Food and beverages– get some sandwiches and fruit all the time with you
    • Light-colored clothes, Sun hats
