Year1832 – 1836: Crown Prince Maximilian of Bavaria had the ruin of Schwanstein Castle rebuilt in a neo-gothic style. This is where King Ludwig II spent his childhood.

Most visitors come to Hohenschwangau Castle between July and September, so during this time especially, considerable waiting times must be expected. It is also possible that all the available entrance tickets will already have been sold by lunchtime.

There are 4 parking lots in the village of Hohenschwangau:
P1 = next to the “Apollo duty-free” shop,
P2, P3 = at the roundabout next to Restaurant Cafe Kainz,
P4 = next to Lake Alpsee
No parking between 8.00 pm. and 8.00 am.

3 ways to the castle:
On foot
It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the ticket center to the castle.
By horse-drawn carriage
Carriage-stop valley: in front of the Ticket Center
Carriage-stop castle: directly at the Hohenschwangau castle
Price:
Uphill: € 4,50 Downhill: € 2,00
You pay directly to the horse carriage driver.
Duration of the ride: approx. 10 minutes.
Important note: During the winter opening hours of the castle, there is no carriage transfer to Hohenschwangau Castle.
TicketsThe castle can be visited on its own or as part of a combined visit (and ticket) with Neuschwanstein.
Like Neuschwanstein, a visit is only possible as part of a guided tour.
Your entrance ticket is valid for a guided tour of the castle at a particular time. 
You need to allow sufficient time to get up to the castle, as if you arrive too late you will no longer be able to participate in the tour.

What you will visit at the Hohenschwangau Castle

The Hall of the Heroes – The largest room in Hohenschwangau Castle is the banquet hall, which is also called “the Hall of the Heroes”.

The Oriental room – The “Oriental room” used to be the bedroom of Queen Mary, the mother of King Ludwig II

The Hohenstaufen-room – The “Hohenstaufen-room” served King Maximilian II. and King Ludwig II. as a dressing room. But it was King Ludwig II. music room as well. The piano, which is to be seen here, was probably the one, the famous composer Richard Wagner used to play when he visited Hohenschwangau Castle.

The Tasso-room – The “Tasso-room” was the bedroom of the kings.

The Berchta-room – The “Berchta-room” was the writing room of Queen Mary.
