Cologne Cathedral – Germany’s most popular tourist attraction
600 years to build – Begun in 1248, the construction of this Gothic masterpiece took place in several stages and was not completed until 1880.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996.
Since its completion in 1880, the Cologne Cathedral held the title of the World’s tallest building until 1884.
There are 6 million visitors every year.
It is one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic and Neo-Gothic architecture in the world.
The massive gold Shrine of the Three Kings
Near the high altar is the massive gold Shrine of the Three Kings, containing what are said to be relics of the Magi who attended the infant Jesus. The shrine was brought to the city in 1164.
Cologne Cathedral was hit by 14 bombs during World War II, but the building did not fall.
Of the many works of art in the Cathedral, special mention should be made to the Gero Crucifix of the late 10th century, in the Chapel of the Holy Cross.
In the Sacrament Chapel is the Mailänder Madonna (“Milan Madonna“), dating from around 1290, a wooden sculpture depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus.
Cologne Cathedral and the end of the world
There is an ancient legend connected with the Cologne Cathedral, which states that when the cathedral is finally erected, the end of the world will come. Believe in this legend, or consider it an implausible myth, everyone’s business, but the construction and reconstruction of the Cologne Cathedral are also taking place in the 21st century.
